How to Fix a Control Arm?

2026-05-26 Hits: 455
Step 1: Remove the Wheel
Use a lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheel. Lift the wheel off and set it aside. This gives you clear access to the suspension and wheel knuckle.

Step 2: Locate the Upper Control Arm
The upper control arm is connected to the frame at one end and the upper part of the wheel hub or knuckle at the other. Identify the attachment points, including the bushings and the ball joint.

Step 3: Remove the Ball Joint
Use a socket wrench to loosen, but not fully remove, the nut securing the ball joint to the spindle. Then, use a ball joint separator tool or a hammer to gently tap the spindle, freeing the ball joint from the spindle. Once it’s separated, remove the nut completely.

Step 4: Disconnect the Upper Control Arm from the Frame
Locate the bolts securing the control arm to the vehicle’s frame. Apply penetrating oil if the bolts are rusted or stuck. If it’s badly seized, you may need to use a torch to heat up fasteners or a grinder or saw to cut them. Be extremely cautious if heat or cutting is required – if you contact other parts, it can add frustrating time and expense to your repair.

Carefully slide the control arm out of its mounting points. Take note of how the control arm was positioned to make installing the new part easier.

Step 5: Inspect and Compare Parts
Before installing the new control arm, compare it to the old one to ensure they’re the same. Inspect the bushings and ball joint to confirm they are in good condition and the same style and size as the old ones.

Step 6: Install the New Upper Control Arm
Align the new control arm with the mounting points on the frame. Insert the bolts but do not fully tighten them yet.

Attach the ball joint to the spindle and secure it with the nut. Use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to the manufacturer’s specifications which you’ll find in the repair manual.

Return to the bolts securing the control arm to the frame and tighten them to the recommended torque.

Step 7: Reinstall the Wheel and Lower the Vehicle
Reattach the wheel and tighten the lug nuts by hand. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the proper torque specifications.

Step 8: Test the New Control Arm
Double-check all connections to ensure they are secure and properly torqued, then take the vehicle for a short drive to ensure the steering feels stable and the suspension is functioning correctly. Listen for any unusual noises. When you get back, retorque the lug nuts to spec.
